He majored as civil engineer from the Catholic University of Chile, and as Business Administrator - Economist, Universidad de Chile.  He studied Political Sciences at California University, Los Angeles. He is currently a Senator of the Republic.

 

Some of his positions: Director of the Chilean Budget, Minister of Finance; Dean of the School of Economic Sciences of Universidad de Chile; Rector of Universidad de Chile, 1969-1973. Chairman of the Chilean Universities Council of Presidents, 1969 - 1973.

 

He was Vice-President of the Democrat Christian Party, 1987 -1989. Coordinator of Political Relations and Government Program of the Association of Parties towards Democracy, 1988-1989; Minister General Secretary of the Presidency of the Republic, since March 1990 to March 1994, and Senator of the Republic since 1998.
